TROPF-BLUMAT FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

General

What’s the difference between Tropf-Blumat and time-controlled systems?

Time-controlled systems release a set amount of water at fixed times, regardless of conditions. They don’t adjust for sunlight, soil moisture, or the needs of individual plants. Tropf-Blumat, on the other hand, responds directly to soil moisture, watering only when your plants need it.

Should I turn off the tap when it rains?

No. Leave the tap open. If rain provides enough water, Tropf-Blumat won’t release any.

What if the water supply is interrupted?

At first, nothing happens. But if it stays off too long, the soil can draw water out of the sensor, letting in air and stopping the valve from working. Simply refill the Tropf-Blumat to reset it.

Can Tropf-Blumat water a lawn?

No. It’s designed for localized drip irrigation. Lawns require sprinklers, rain guns, or other large-area systems.

Is it safe for watering vegetables, fruit, and herbs?

Yes. All water-carrying parts meet Austrian drinking water standards and are free of BPA and phthalates.

Are Tropf-Blumat products suitable for drinking water?

No. They’re safe for plants but not certified for use with drinking water.

Can I mix flowers, vegetables, and other plants in one system?

Yes. Each Tropf-Blumat sensor controls watering independently.

Pressure Reducer

Why is it necessary to use a pressure reducer?

The system works at max. 1.3 bar. Higher pressure risks blowing tubes off connectors

How tight should it be screwed on?

Hand-tight only. Never use tools, which can damage the thread.

What if it starts leaking?

The seal may be brittle. Replace the sealing filter (original or any suitable bathroom type). Avoid forcing the Pressure Reducer—it can damage the plastic thread. Also check the tap for corrosion, limescale, or scratches.

Does it need a specific position?

No. The 8 mm outflow can point in any direction.

Tank

How big should my tank be?

That depends on plant numbers, their needs, and how often you want to refill.

What material is best?

Any material works. Use an opaque tank to prevent algae growth, and cover it with a lid to keep out insects or debris.

Where should I place the Tank Connector?

A few centimeters above the bottom so sediment stays out of the tubes. For large tanks, install a low outlet for easy flushing.

Why must the tank be max. 12 m above plants?

Every meter of height adds 0.1 bar pressure. A 12 m height equals 1.3 bar, the system’s maximum.

Can I use the filter with an old connector?

No, the new filter needs two side pegs to fit securely.

Can I use rainwater?

Yes. Just keep leaves and debris out. A water filter is recommended.

Feeding Tube

What should I watch out for?

Avoid kinks, sharp bends, or tight pulls. Allow slack for winter contraction.

Why no lubricants for assembly

They damage the tubing. Use water or gentle heat (hairdryer) instead.

Drip Tube

How long can it be?

Up to 6 feet between the Tropf-Blumat and a T-piece/end-piece. Keep it unkinked, unobstructed, and that no objects are standing on it that would cut off the water supply.

Distribution Drippers

Can I adjust the water flow?

No. The screw is factory-set. If one dripper is weaker, clean it.

How do I clean them?

Soak in warm water with vinegar or descaler. Use a toothbrush to remove buildup.

What about hard water?

With hard water, limescale buildup is inevitable. Clean them more often.

Settings

How do I adjust soil moisture?

By changing the drip tube length beyond the Tropf-Blumat:
• Shorter (min. 5 cm): soil stays drier
• Standard (8 cm): balanced
• Longer (max. 12 cm): soil stays wetter

Fertilization

Can I add liquid fertilizer to the tank?

Yes, but follow dosage carefully. Fertilizer may crystallize and clog tubes over time (expect replacement every 3–5 years). Annual chemical cleaning is possible—observe local regulations.

What about before/after the Pressure Reducer?

Possible with high-quality dosing devices (e.g. Dosatron). Same caution about clogging applies.

Winter

Do I need to remove the Pressure Reduce

Yes, before the first frost.

What about feeding tubes?

They can stay outside.

What about Tropf-Blumat sensors?

They’re frost-proof but last longer if cleaned and stored dry in winter.

What about Tropf-Blumat Maxi sensors?

Often embedded in roots, so they’re built to stay put. Shut off water, drain the head, and reseal. If easy to remove, clean and store them like regular sensors

Troubleshooting

Why isn't there water coming out of my new Tropf-Blumat sensor, even after I've completely unscrewed the screw.

They are shiped closed. If the drip tube is stuck, it may be a gummed up section, so pull it out and massage it until free.

Dripping continues after cold autumn nights?

The membrane stiffens in colder weather. Close the screw slightly (2–3 markings).
